Requirements
Students will be required to submit a portfolio of written and computer-based exercises, which will include the following topics:
Topic 1: Sampling and Sampling Distributions
Topic 2: Estimation and Confidence Intervals
Topic 3: Hypothesis Testing
Topic 4: Parametric Tests (t and z tests)
Topic 5: Analysis of Variance
Topic 6: Non-Parametric Tests
Topic 7: Chi-squared Test (including Contingency Tables)
Topic 8: Control Charts
Topic 9: Statistical Replacement Methods
Topics 1-2 use calculations on paper and Microsoft Excel.
Topics 3-9 use a combination of Microsoft Excel and SPSS.
Students are expected to show their proficiency using a variety of tools and techniques.
The specific exercises will be issued on a weekly basis and displayed on Moodle.
Indicative exercises are attached. Some exercises use larger data sets which will be available on Moodle.
There will be an emphasis on presentation and interpretation of results as well as performing calculations correctly. A report must be submitted for each Topic (maximum 500 words per topic), this may include comments on individual questions and an overall summary. This should be included in Text Boxes in the Excel worksheets.
Please note: The Portfolio should be submitted electronically using Moodle.
SPSS output can be pasted into Excel worksheets.
If possible a single Excel spreadsheet should be submitted with one worksheet for each question clearly labelled (e.g. Topic 2 Q3). Comments should be included in Text Boxes in the Excel worksheets. Avoid zipped or RAR files.
Marking Scheme
The mark will be based on the best SIX topics. Some credit may also be given for additional exercises.
For each topic there will be a choice of questions each with marks allocated: students should answer questions or parts of questions with a total of 100 marks for each topic.
The whole portfolio is to be submitted at the end of the first week after the Winter vacation (12:00 noon on Friday 11th January 2019).
